Windows & Testing Continues

Saturday, January 31st, 2009

Well i had an issue with my server which has now been fixed.  Windows 7 right now is much better than vista.  It’s not up to XP speeds but with the DRM infestation and Aero it’s not going to be..it runs a bunch better than vista AND uac so far is not nagging me every 3 seconds…:)  I’ll be doing networking speed and other networking testing shortly.

Time for forced updates? Conficker botnet makes us wonder – Ars Technica

Monday, January 26th, 2009

New to the botnet scene is Conficker, a botnet that exploits a critical security vulnerability Microsoft actually patched in late October. It may be time for Microsoft to begin forcing critical security updates upon home users.

via Time for forced updates? Conficker botnet makes us wonder – Ars Technica.

this is totally bogus..guess what?  It’s mainly in eastern Asia and southern America where the priacy rates are really really high AND businesses which are typcially slow to patch anyway…most home users have automatic updates turned on and also the us infection rate is 1%.  It’s not the home users this time..it’s the businesses..however NOBODY should have upodates forced upon them.

SANS Internet Storm Center; Cooperative Network Security Community – Internet Security – isc.

I never believe any company when they say on non-criticalo informaiton was stolen.  Expecially in light of hte following statement:

“including user IDs and passwords”

If they have your userid and password they have EVVERYTHING!!!!  Consider this as a full security breach.  What is interesting is SANS also acts like this is no big deal.

Seagate/Mastor Drive issues

Tuesday, January 20th, 2009

AnandTech.

I hit this issue with the onetouch series 4 external drives.  Anything based on the barracuda .11 series is having issues.  I had to return the drives and go with some seagate laptop external drives.

I mean really, don’t these computer “geniuses” (also known as hackers) have anything better to do with their time. Imagine if they wrote productive software!

I mean really, don’t the geniuses, (also known as Microsoft programmers) have anything better to do with their time?  Imagine if they wrote truly secure software insstead of foisting patched, resues, and vulnerable software on the general marketplace?  Go get your worm shot by running microsoft update.

Narrowing Down My Firewall Server Offerings

Saturday, January 17th, 2009

There are so many out there it’s hard to sift through.  I have narrowed things down to 4:

1.  Ipfire

2. Astaro

3. Untangle

4.  Comixwall

Depending on capabilities and budget those are the 4 ECC is going to be choosing from for the foreseeable future.  This makes it easier for my clients to know what i am offering and makes it easier for me since i’m not suporting 10 different server packages.  I intend on narrowing it down to 2 in the near future.

I’m a N00B

Wow.  I just got done talking with the guys at darkfiles and found out how much i have yet to learn..:)  It’s the kind of stuff one of my best friends named Erik talks about all of the time.  It’s nice to see I have a new area of network security knowledge to explore.  They were very gracious to allow me to talk with them and i am looking orward to more conversations.

ComixWall ISG – Home.

Now this is interesting.  Comixwall looks like what i ahve been looking for.  I have been wanting to find a UTM that takes what i had with ipcop/zerina/cop+/copfilter and have it integrated into one package…and be free.  Astaro is very nice but it’s free only for home use.  Untangle is nice but it’s feature set is compromised by their wanting to complete with astaro so the free content filter and free anti-spam are compromised in their effectiveness unless yiou go commerical.  Comixwall is totally free and so far looks promising..more to come.

My First Major Issue

Tuesday, January 13th, 2009

I cannot get the machine to process GP due to some kind of RSOP error.  I have sent the feedback using the internal tools.  I’m going to test with vista to see if the same issue presents itself.

My Initial Windows 7 Beta Impressions

Monday, January 12th, 2009

I just finished loading up Windows 7 onto my core celeron 1.6 ghz laptop.  2 gigs of ram and a 80 gig hard disk.  All I can say is..wow.  In terms of speed it’s much much faster than vista.  it’s not XP class speed but for a beta form Microsoft it’s very well polished.

First of all it is actually vista 2.0.  It still have the vista interface and the vista DRM infestation.  What’s changed though is they have made some significant changes under the hood.  The system is much snappier and doesn’t just hang for no reason while nailing the cpu and hard drive forever.  Networking is actually useable with UAC on and the system doesn’t nag you to death about doing menial tasks.  I have installed Firefox and flash right now with no issues whatsoever.  I’ll keep you posting as my beta testing continues.
